El Al and Delta have recently unveiled their plans to establish a comprehensive codeshare agreement and mileage partnership.

This exciting collaboration will enable passengers to book connecting flights seamlessly and conveniently check their bags through to their final destination when flying with either Delta or El Al.

Under this new partnership, travelers will have the opportunity to earn and redeem Delta miles for El Al flights, as well as accrue El Al points for Delta flights.

However, it is worth noting that both carriers have traditionally not been recognized for their particularly favorable redemption rates. In comparison, American and United have typically offered more affordable partner redemption options than Delta, making this partnership somewhat less advantageous in terms of mileage rewards for customers in the United States.

El Al's strategic partnerships will extend across multiple airlines from all three major airline alliances. These alliances include Alaska and Qantas from the OneWorld alliance, Delta from the SkyTeam alliance, and ANA from the Star Alliance.

By collaborating with airlines from various alliances, El Al aims to enhance its global connectivity and offer passengers a wider range of travel options.

The choice of Delta as a partner over American comes as a surprise to some, considering Delta's rapid growth in the Israeli market and its status as a strong competitor to El Al. Both Delta and El Al operate flights to Boston and JFK, with Delta additionally offering service to Atlanta.

Delta has highlighted the benefits of its Atlanta connections, but it's unclear how relevant this is to the partnership. Nevertheless, Delta's Atlanta route has proven successful. However, Delta has limited connectivity in Miami and Newark, where El Al operates flights. Through this partnership, El Al's Los Angeles route will gain increased connectivity within the United States through Delta.

In contrast, American Airlines has faced challenges in the Israeli market and had to reduce its Miami-Tel Aviv flights. Initially, it seemed logical for El Al to join forces with American, as this would have provided access to connecting passengers in Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami.

Such a partnership would have likely resulted in El Al joining the OneWorld alliance, which holds a stronger position compared to the SkyTeam alliance. However, with the current development, joining SkyTeam appears more probable for El Al.

In summary, the codeshare and mileage partnership between El Al and Delta promises improved connectivity and convenience for travelers. While the redemption rates may not be as favorable as with other carriers, this collaboration marks an important step for both airlines in expanding their networks and providing enhanced travel options to passengers.
