Today, Chase launched a new credit card option that is perfect for small business owners who prefer to use Southwest Airlines. The Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business credit card is here!
One of the best perks of this card is that you earn a humongous 80K sign on bonus after spending $5000 in the first 3 months. This great bonus will get you very close to earning a fee Companion Pass right away.
According to experts like The Points Guy, the 80K points are worth about 1.5 cents each, or $1200 total. In addition, you will earn 3X points for every dollar spent on Southwest, including hotel and car rental partners.
You will earn 2X point for all spending on social media and search engine advertising, all internet services, cable services, and phone charges. Earn 1X for all other spending.
Currently, the Chase Sapphire Reserve allows you to earn 3X on travel spending, but when you opt for the Southwest Performance Business card instead, your points will also count toward earning a Companion Pass.
Additional benefits that are included with the Southwest Performance Business card:
- 4 boarding passes per year for A1-A15 seating
- 365 $8 credits for wi-fi use (all day passes)
- $100 every 4 years toward Global Entry or TSA Pre-check
- 1500 Tier Qualifying Points for every $10K in spending, up to 15K Tier Qualifying Points each year
- 9K Rapid Rewards points every year on your anniversary
The Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Credit Card does have a $199 annual fee, which is not waived during the first year. But, since the priority boarding passes alone cost between $30-50 bucks each, you will save more than the annual fee just by using those.
There are no foreign transaction fees with this card, making it great for travel spending.
Also, if you use wi-fi, you get $8 credit every day of the year, if necessary.
Business owners who spend more than $10K on the card will earn 1500 Tier Qualifying Points, which gets them closer to qualifying for A-List or A-List Preferred Elite Status on Southwest.
Business owners will also be able to get free employee cards, and earn points on all employee spending.
Companion Pass Details
A big question for those considering this card would be how to obtain a Southwest Companion Pass. The 80K sign on bonus points gets you about 75% of the way toward the 110K points you need in one year to earn a companion pass. When you factor in the points you will earn from your regular spending, you will only have to spend about $25K in one year to get the companion pass—without even taking advantage of the 3X points for Southwest spending. If you do have any Southwest spending, the 3X points will add up quickly.
Although you can have only one Southwest personal card, you can have both a business and a personal card, and combine the points and bonuses to earn rewards more quickly. Remember the 5/24 rule, though, as Chase sticks to this condition.
How to Get a Small Business Card
To qualify for a small business card, you do need to have a small business of some type. But, your business can be quite small to qualify. You don’t necessarily need a building and huge payroll. Many people with a small side business can qualify.
The Bottom Line
While the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business credit card is not the cheapest option available, it does offer one of the largest sign on bonuses currently available. Some other Southwest cards offer additional Southwest benefits, like travel credits, etc., but the big points and the option to earn a companion certificate quickly make this an attractive option.
